Mounting
The question: „How you will present your works?“ is one of the very common questions while talking with our clients.
Foto Leutner is very well know for the very good quality at the mounting department. Since many years we are specialized in mounting photography works for art exhibitions, private collectors, fashion & advertising photographers, museums, galleries, corporate company offices and many others.
We are well connected with international galleries, auction houses, we are visiting international art fairs, fairs for presentation & display materials, art & architecture exhibitions, all done to keep our know how at the latest level for great & state of the art presentation. We are working hard to show the best techniques and latest news to our clients and everytime the highest standards for durability will come first.
In our mounting department on one hand we are working with very easy, inexpensive materials like FOREX plates best for mounting photoprints, posters, maps before they get framed and on the other hand we are doing face mounting behind Plexiglas or mounting silver gelatine prints on 1mm Aluminum plates. We are constructing crates if you need to transport your works by a shipping company, too. In some cases you probably would need some special work, like contour milling, polished edges, mounting behind 20 mm Plexiglas, mounting on circle plates and other special works, we can help you with this special works!
We work with a mounting & lamination machine width 200 cm, so we can mount photos on plates up to a size of 180×400 cm. Larger works will be done in several pieces and than mounted to one piece.
The material a photoprint should be mounted, depends on the size of the work and on the way the print should be go on display. When the print should be should be framed and is larger than 30×40 cm it would be necessary to mount it behind on PVC (FOREX) material 2-3 mm or on 2 mm Dibond plates. These materials are rigid and helps that the photoprint would be 100% flat in the frame, not bending. Up to the size of 30×40 cm, mounting is not necessary, because the photographic paper is stable enough, avoiding bending in the frame.
If you would not like the photowork getting framed, but still mounted, to hang it on a wall, we would recommend facemounting behind 3-5 mm Plexiglas or mounting on 2 mm aluminum or 3 mm Dibond plates.
Mounting on aluminum
Sizes possible from 3×5 cm up to 200×400 cm, we use aluminum plates 1 or 2 mm thick.
Ideal for art works, presentation, displays.
For hanging up we mount aluminum braces on the backside. These U shape profiles give a 10/20/30/40/50 mm distance to the wall. Hanging up is very easy wit these profiles, just needs a screw and than hang the mounted photowork onto the screw with this aluminum brace.
Mounting on aluminum-pvc composite material (Dibond)
This material is not as heavy as aluminum but very rigide too. Sizes possible from 3×5 cm up to 200×400 cm, we use Dibond plates 2/3/4 mm thick.
Ideal for art works, presentation, displays.
For hanging up we mount aluminum braces on the backside. These U shape profiles give a 10/20/30/40/50 mm distance to the wall. Hanging up is very easy with these profiles, just needs a screw and than hang the mounted photowork onto the screw with this aluminum brace.
Face mounting behind Plexiglas/Acrylic glass
A very exclusive way of mounting photo works with a lot of advantages. Many well known artists as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Elger Esser, Massimo Vitali, Lois Renner among others work this way. The photoprint is face mounted behind 2-5 mm Plexiglas, also up to 25 mm Plexiglas is possible. Plexiglas is an excellent UV protection fort he photoprint, it absorbs 90% of UV rays and is a perfect protection against scratching the photos.
Facemounting works best with c-prints in matt but with some giclee prints as well (we recommend Hahnemuehle photo rag ultra smooth).
Maximum size: 180×400 cm in one piece.
We also work with Plexiglas with matt surface (antireflex).
New: We also work with Plexiglas that has a silicate layer which avoids scratches in a very efficient way. You can work with scotch brite cleaning stuff and it would get scratched.
On the backsite of the face mounted print, we mount a 2 mm aluminum or a 2-3 mm Dibond plate for having the photowork more rigide and for hanging on the wall we mount an aluminum brace. These U shape profiles give a 10/20/30/40/50 mm distance to the wall. Hanging up is very easy with these profiles, just needs a screw and than hang the mounted photowork onto the screw with this aluminum brace.
Mounting on KAPA Cardboard/KAPAfix or acid free Hahnemuehle cardboard
KAPA Cardboard is a very light but still rigid plate, it consists of two layers of cardboard and foam material in the middle. The foam middle part is 2-10 mm thick. This material we recommend to avoid bending of the photoprint in a frame or for mounting a display on a booth wall for easy presentation (we recommend adhesive velcro stripes for this purpose).
KAPA Cardboard is available in max. size 120×240 cm. Please keep in mind that the edges of the KAPA plates can be damaged easily. For mounting photoprints on acid free cardboard we are using cardboard plates from Hahnemuehle, 2 mm thick, ph level 7,5 – maximum size: 100×122 cm. Many photoarchives are working with these Hahnemuehle acid free cardboard plates.
Mounting on PVC plates (FOREX or SINTRA)
White PVC plates, 3/4/5 mm thick, up to 200×300 cm in one piece. Best for framing prints and avoid bending in the frame or presentation at the walls of a fair booth. Aluminum braces for hanging are not possible with this material.
Lightboxes
More and more clients are asking for lightboxes. Presenting photo artwork at lightboxes is getting more and more common, as lightboxes are getting cheaper and easier to work with, using LED technology nowadays.
LED lightboxes have a very easy handling, no bulbes or tubes have to be changed, a dimmer is perfect for the right balance of light intensity and LED lightboxes are saving a lot of energy.
The frame of the lightbox can be produced in on different RAL colors and in pure aluminum, without paint. These aluminum frames are coming in a width between 8 – 17 cm.
New design by Foto Leutner: Lightbox without a frame, no frame is visible having a look at the lightbox from the front. More and more clients have asked us for lightboxes, based on a design, which is not showing an aluminum frame profile from the front.
Frames
On request we are also framing the photo works, we are printing in our lab. We are framing in wooden frames, aluminum frames, frames with a regular glass plate or acrylic glass plate in front or with a non reflective, museum glass UV protection. We are very open for customized framing ideas from our clients.
