We are very proud to have been chosen by the American artist Carrie Schneider to produce her work for the 2026 Venice Biennale.

This photographic work was exposed by the artist in her studio in New York using a camera obscura on a Fujifilm jumbo roll of Crystal Archive paper, and was then developed here in our photo lab.

The roll width of the Fujifilm paper is 145cm – and the length of the photographic exposure is 1 kilometre – 1,000 metres.

This Fujifilm jumbo roll was brought to us from New York and developed together with the artist in our darkroom; it is now on display at the Venice Biennale in the Arsenale, Hall 2 – until 22 November 2026.

gmunden.photo is dedicating a solo exhibition —the first in this series originally conceived as group exhibitions— to VALIE EXPORT.

For more than five decades, VALIE EXPORT’s work has been informed by critical explorations of society, identity, the body, and the media.

Conceived especially for Gmunden, the exhibition “VALIE EXPORT: Hitting the Eye” on the one hand is a survey show of EXPORT’s best-known works. On the other, the presentation in the public realm and the innovative take on the specifics of the venue also offer an opportunity to view the artist’s work in an entirely new form and environment.

We produced the analogue black-and-white prints on Ilford Multicontrast RC glossy paper and then laminated them onto Dibond panels.

Production of the House of Craft Exhibition

To mark the launch of UBS Bank’s House of Craft exhibition series, a special exhibition space was set up at 28 Pine Street in New York’s Financial District, showcasing 36 large-format photographs by photographer Brigitte Niedermair. The opening took place on 6 June 2025.

These photographs of the Christian Dior collections were taken by Brigitte Niedermair on 4×5″ diapositives, scanned with Imacon X5 and exposed with the OCE Lightjet on Fuji Crystal Archiv DPII glossy photo paper in 125 x 158 cm format, laminated onto Dibond panels and then framed in oak frames with spacer strips and corner joints.

The photo prints were all produced by us at Foto Leutner, packed in wooden boxes and shipped to New York by air freight. Photographer Brigitte Niedermair came to our lab for colour balancing and a final check.

TERRIBLE BEAUTY // 30. Juni – 11. August 2024

Die gmunden.photo 2024 versammelt 20 Positionen nationaler wie internationaler Fotokunst und bleibt dem Prinzip, große Namen der Fotografie und junge Künstler:innen Seite an Seite zu präsentieren, treu.

Der Titel TERRIBLE BEAUTY zielt auf das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen althergebrachten, romantisierenden Erinnerungen, Vorstellungen und Bildern von Landschaft und den multiplen Missständen und Krisen im Kontext des Klimawandels ab.

Präsentiert im Stadtgarten Gmunden in ehemaligen Schiffscontainern sowie erstmals in einer rund 300m2 großen Kunsthalle am Festivalgelände bildet das Projekt auch einen Beitrag zur Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt 2024.

Exhibition: Elfie Semotan at Francisco Carolinum, Linz

Elfie Semotan’s exhibition begins with the picture series “untitled (Birkenwald), New York, 1999”, which can be seen in the corridors of the Francisco Carolinum. Following the blurred silhouettes in the forest, visitors are led into the exhibition rooms. On closer inspection, the dark, forest-like ambience turns out to be an artificially created birch forest. The series sets the tone for the themes explored in the exhibition: experiments with fashion photography and the intersection of commercial work and artistic interventions.

There is no classic fashion photography to be found here, because the aim is not to produce even more aesthetic and glamorous images, but rather to locate them differently. Perhaps even presenting less perfect, more inaccessible faces, not clichédly promoting elegant movements as the ideal, but instead showing unusual, inappropriate gestures. Elfie Semotan’s creative freedom in staging fashion campaigns is evident in the selected works for Liska between 1999 and 2018, as well as in editorials for Allure, D-Magazine and Madame magazines. The long collaboration with fashion designer Helmut Lang unfolds in fragmented, underexposed “backstage” photographs that provide an insight into hurried moments before the catwalk appearance.

We realised the photo prints as pigment prints on Hahnemühle sugar-cane and Hahnemühle Photo Rag ultra smooth on our EPSON P 20000 printer!

UNSEEN PLACES: Inaccessible landscapes, sealed-off territories or restricted military areas: In his works, Gregor Sailer shows surreal architectures at the margins of human civilisation.

KUNST HAUS WIEN is dedicating its first major exhibition in Austria to the photo artist. Sailer’s images open up access to the world of fakes, copies and backdrops and question these sometimes absurd excesses of our contemporary society. Gregor Sailer’s works require months of research work and stays under extreme conditions, for example in the Arctic at minus 50 degrees.

Mit der Ausstellung „The mysterious world – Natalia LL“ im Francisco Carolinum wird die Grande Dame der zeitgenössischen Kunst Polens erstmals in einer umfassenden Retrospektive in Österreich gezeigt. In den 1970er Jahren schafft die Künstlerin Natalia LL (Jahrgang 1937) Ikonen der feministischen Bildproduktion: Die Werkreihe „Consumer Art“ zeigt Bilder von jungen Frauen, die genussvoll Bananen, Würste oder Eiscreme verspeisen und bricht radikal mit dem kühlen Rationalismus konzeptueller Kunst. Was in gängigen Werbebotschaften Sinnlichkeit und Erotik verspricht, wird in ihren Arbeiten als selbstbewusste feministische Position artikuliert. Die Themen Sehnsucht und Fantasien, Träume und Irrationales sind wichtige Bezugspunkte in Natalia LLs Schaffen.

Kuratiert wurde die Ausstellung von Nathalie Hoyos und Rainald Schumacher in Zusammenarbeit mit Michaela Seiser.

Der Großteil der gezeigten Fotoarbeiten wurde für die Ausstellung als exhibition prints angefertigt und auf Forex Platten kaschiert, als Vorbereitung zum Rahmen in Magnetrahmen der Firma Halbe
Die Fotoarbeiten wurden passend zum jeweiligen Werkzyklus der Künstlerin auf vier verschiedenen Materialien produziert, als digitale Fotobelichtungen auf SW Barytpapier Ilford Harman GDS FB, als Fotobelichtung auf Fujicolor Crystal Archive Professional Deep Matte Velvet Paper und auf Kodak Endura Premier glänzend, aber auch als Pigmentdrucke auf TECCO PM230 für eine plakative Bildwiedergabe.

Ausstellungsansichten: Michael Maritsch

Die junge chinesische Fotografin Luo Yang (geb. 1984) ist erstmals in einer Einzelausstellung in Österreich zu sehen. Im FC – Francisco Carolinum werden 64 Fotografien aus den Serien GIRLS und YOUTH gezeigt.

Luo Yang studierte Grafikdesign an der Kunstuniversität in Shenyang, wandte sich nach dem Studium jedoch der Fotografie zu. Zwischen 2008 und 2016 entstand die umfangreiche Serie GIRLS, eine sehr persönliche Auseinandersetzung der Fotografin mit Frauen ihrer Generation. Ob vor den Kulissen chinesischer Megastädte oder in intimen Settings im privaten Umfeld, die jungen Frauen präsentieren sich selbstbewusst und individuell, wirken gleichzeitig aber verletzlich und fragil.

Luo Yang fotografiert analog und digital. Das Color Negativmaterial wurde in China von der Fotografin eingescannt und die Scans wurden in Folge an das Museum gesandt. Für die Produktion war die Vorgabe möglichst schöne Hauttöne zu bekommen. Die Ausarbeitung erfolgte als C-Prints belichtet mit OCE-lightjet. Die Prints wurden für die Rahmung passend auf 3mm Dibondplatten kaschiert.

Die analoge Fotografie feiert seit Jahren ein Comeback. Im Pop-Up Fotolabor in der ehemaligen Waschküche der Postsparkasse gibt es die Möglichkeit, der analogen Bildentwicklung auf die Spur zu kommen. Unter Anleitung von ExpertInnen kann man die Fotografie als lichtbasierende Kunst mit Händen und Augen verstehen lernen.

Zum 20. Geburtstags des Magazins wird der RONDO-Fotopreis powered by Leica lanciert. Der Gewinner erhält 2.000 Euro und die Möglichkeit, eine Fotostrecke im RONDO zu gestalten.

Der RONDO-Fotopreis powered by Leica richtet sich an Fotografinnen und Fotografen. Die eingesendeten Einzelarbeiten (keine Serien) müssen dem Thema “Rund” und dem Medium Foto, im weiteren Sinne, entsprechen und dürfen nicht bereits in größerem Rahmen veröffentlicht worden sein. Begutachtet werden alle Fotos, die mit Betreff “Rund” bis 15. März im Postfach unter rondo-fotopreis@derstandard.at einlangen. Der RONDO-Fotopreis powered by Leica ist mit 2.000 Euro dotiert.

Die eingereichten Arbeiten müssen dem Motto “Rund” entsprechen. Nach Ablauf der Einsendefrist am 15. März (mit Betreff: “Rund” an rondo-fotopreis@derstandard.at) werden die besten Arbeiten ausgewählt und vom 20. März bis 6. April im Zuge der “Foto Wien” ausgestellt.

Das Festival findet zum ersten Mal statt und zeigt Fotoprojekte in der ganzen Stadt. Als Festivalzentrale fungiert die Postsparkasse im ersten Bezirk. Im Kassensaal des Gebäudes von Otto Wagner wird die Shortlist des RONDO-Fotopreises powered by Leica gezeigt.

Produziert werden die Ausstellungsfotos von Foto Leutner. Seit drei Generationen ist das Familienunternehmen spezialisiert auf Fotoausarbeitungen für Kunst, Museen, Design und Werbung.

Am 28. März findet schließlich die Preisverleihung statt, bei der das Gewinnerfoto gekürt wird und einen Ehrenplatz in der Ausstellung bekommt. Der Preisträger kann außerdem eine Fotostrecke im RONDO gestalten.
